JAKARTA - An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale (SR) occurred in the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra. The quake centered at latitude dives 4.92 - 94.39 east longitude with a depth of 10 km.
Previous earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter Scale (SR) also occurred at 19:49:41 with the center at 5.61 degrees southern latitude (LS) and 94.05 east longitude (BT) is 682 km south-west of Mentawai Islands of West Sumatra, at a depth of 10 km below ground.

Deputy Geophysics BMKG, Masturyono explained, the earthquake caused by the activity of the subduction zone formed by a collision or penunjuman Indo-Australian plate against the Eurasian Plate.
