Jeff Fisher chooses to coach Rams over Dolphins

Jeff Fisher has chosen to coach the St. Louis Rams over the Miami Dolphins, the team confirmed to USA TODAY.

Fisher has informed the team he wants to be their coach, but negotiations are still ongoing and nothing is yet official.

ESPN first reported the development.

The coaching free agent had narrowed down his options to the two franchises and had planned on naming his choice earlier in the week, according to several reports.

Fisher was once the longest-tenured coach in the league before Tennessee stepping down last January after 17 seasons.

He had only six winning seasons as coach but his teams finished with at least 12 wins four times. His career record is 142-120 (.542).

St. Louis fired coach Steve Spagnuolo and general manager Billy Devaney after a 2-14 season.

The Rams have former No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford at QB, the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft and a favorable salary-cap situation. Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff is the son of Fisher's agent, Marvin Demoff.

Fisher joins the team that narrowly denied his Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV.
